From NAS to Windows 2003 Server

Our network attached storage (NAS) unit originally shipped with Linux running a custom web interface. The unit was supposed to be used for storage accross all different OS platforms. The Linux OS didn't provide the flexibility we needed in our Windows Server environment, so I took on the task of converting it to a Windows 2003 Server.

Upon opening the case I was shocked to see that the advertised SCSI hard drives were actually plain IDE drives with SCSI converters. This allowed for hot swapping of the drives, but the drive performance was no where near that of SCSI drives.

The drive connector backplane was custom designed for this unit, and there were no drivers avaliable for Windows, so I had to remove the backplane and add an additional IDE card. Once all the drives were accessable in BIOS, Windows 2003 Server was installed.

The unit works great as a Windows based application and file server.
